Summary

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkeness bind them

In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, The Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others。 But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him。 After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit。

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care。 Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose。

My personal favorite of the trilogy。 I love the way the journey begins, and the world is set up。 This is the best of the best within the genre and literature in general。 If you don't have a copy yet, please add it to your shelf。 PS: you better buy the other two parts too, while you're at it。 My personal favorite of the trilogy。 I love the way the journey begins, and the world is set up。 This is the best of the best within the genre and literature in general。 If you don't have a copy yet, please add it to your shelf。 PS: you better buy the other two parts too, while you're at it。 。。。more

Rating: 2。5 StarsDue to its incredible fame, I admit I had high expectations for this novel。 Alas, while it was a lively read at times, it could often be incredibly dull。 Interestingly, I found those moments when the characters were stagnant in one place (i。e。 the Shire, Rivendell) to be the most engaging, as characters were given the opportunity to meaningfully interact and a unique culture was displayed。 On the flip-side, when the fellowship was actively journeying, the novel would degrade int Rating: 2。5 StarsDue to its incredible fame, I admit I had high expectations for this novel。 Alas, while it was a lively read at times, it could often be incredibly dull。 Interestingly, I found those moments when the characters were stagnant in one place (i。e。 the Shire, Rivendell) to be the most engaging, as characters were given the opportunity to meaningfully interact and a unique culture was displayed。 On the flip-side, when the fellowship was actively journeying, the novel would degrade into a minute description of the topography of Middle-Earth。 While I can certainly see the appeal for those wth a prior deep vested interest in Tolkien’s world-building, such a writing style simply wasn’t for me。 。。。more

As I am rereading this series, it is interesting to note that in my review of The Hobbit, I noted that J。R。R。 Tolkien managed to keep much of the darkness at bay by frequently looking through the eyes of the Hobbit。 In this, the first book in the LOTR series, the darkness is much more prevalent as the point of view is seen through other eyes and the serious business of the 'one ring' is at hand。 Read approximately 15 times and they never grow old! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3 stars because it took me 16 years to finish it。 I tried multiple times when I was younger to pick it up and read through。 Multiple times I got to the part where they cross the river into Rivendell and found it profoundly boring enough to stop there。 Anyway, listening to the audiobook finally got me over the hump。 It’s finished。 Don’t bash me。 I plan to listen to the other two as well and then I can say I’ve at least experienced the LOTR novels。 Probably going to listen to something else for a 3 stars because it took me 16 years to finish it。 I tried multiple times when I was younger to pick it up and read through。 Multiple times I got to the part where they cross the river into Rivendell and found it profoundly boring enough to stop there。 Anyway, listening to the audiobook finally got me over the hump。 It’s finished。 Don’t bash me。 I plan to listen to the other two as well and then I can say I’ve at least experienced the LOTR novels。 Probably going to listen to something else for a while beforehand though。 I’m sick of songs and endless ramblings about history that isn’t explained。 。。。more

I would like to preface my review with the acknowledgement that some of my more negative critiques may simply be due to stylistic choices with which I don't necessarily connect - perhaps due to my generation, my age, or my stage in life shortening my attention span, or simply due to the fact that not every personprett will like every single style of writing。 On to the review。 In this review I will be critiquing Tolkien, an author that almost everyone deems to be one of the greats - and I do not I would like to preface my review with the acknowledgement that some of my more negative critiques may simply be due to stylistic choices with which I don't necessarily connect - perhaps due to my generation, my age, or my stage in life shortening my attention span, or simply due to the fact that not every personprett will like every single style of writing。 On to the review。 In this review I will be critiquing Tolkien, an author that almost everyone deems to be one of the greats - and I do not deny that he did something fantastic when it comes to literature。 He certainly was one who paved the way for a number of different literary choices and, I would argue, even the game Dungeons and Dragons。 But, alas, no earthly writer is above criticism。 Anyone reading this review probably already knows what The Fellowship of the Ring is all about - the ring of power must be taken to be destroyed so that the Dark Lord doesn't get it。 And this band of heroes is the group that's going to do it。 It's the start of the trilogy (not including The Hobbit), and it reads very much like the start of a series。 Here is the good: Tolkien does a wonderful job with description。 He describes settings and objects and characters in beautiful detail。 For the most parts, his descriptions don't seem to bog the story down。 They make it easier to see in the mind's eye what is happening and where we are - perhaps one reason this world translated so well to the screen in the films。 Another thing that he did well was his writing of action sequences。 An example of this is the Bridge of Kazaddum (pardon my misspelling, please)。 This whole chapter was fast-paced, and it moved。 Written very well。 So, when there are action sequences, they are done in a masterful way。 Here is a critique that is neither negative nor positive: There is a lot of travel in this book。 And, something that Tolkien does arguably well with this is the detail he puts into the travel。 It does bog the book down a bit, but the traveling, at least feels like the length of time it's supposed to。 When time is supposed to feel dragged along and slow (for better or worse) it certainly does。 And when time is supposed to feel more at a standstill, not moving in any way, it simply stops。 The passage of time is written well, though this can also lead to a slower read, and make the book harder to become immersed in, and then appear to be boring。 I know, not everything can be action sequences, but there is a LOT of travel in this book。 Now for my negative critiques: This may simply be because it is the first book in the series, but the characters don't seem super fleshed out。 The hobbits of our fellowship all feel like they are one character, sort of until the end。 They don't seem to be split with differing personalities - not too much anyway。 The fellowship characters seem to be sort of just carboard cutouts of "this is a man。 all he wants is to go to his home。 That's it。" Or "This is a dwarf。 He's just here because he's a dwarf。 Same with the elf。" And this is Aragorn - he has nowhere to grow, because he already is the king, and he knows it, and he's perfectly fine with that。 Not really much character development available。 Allow me to put this another way - all of these characters feel like D&D cardboard character cutouts, it feels like they're just character sheets and someone is playing a game of D&D。 I know I've just insulted a number of people。 Moving on from the characters, we have SO。 MUCH。 EXOPOSITION。 None of this dialogue is written realistically。 I understand that this is a high fantasy realm, but nobody talks in a realistic manner。 And a lot of the dialogue is full of exposition about the world - way too much information dump for a conversation, especially in the council of Elrond。 It feels almost like Tolkien realized that the readers are not, in fact, in his head, and so don't know squat about this world that he created, so he uses the characters to provide exposition to the reader about the world - and yet there is still a ton of information missing, so it still feels like I'm lost in this world and a lot still doesn't make sense。 I shouldn't have to have read the history book about Middle Earth to understand the Lord of the Rings。 The worst example of exposition is the roughly 40 page chapter of the council of Elrond。 Just because it's a meeting doesn't mean it can be a massive exposition dump。 My last negative critique is this: While Tolkien does a wonderful job of describing objects and scenery, he doesn't seem to do as good of a job at developing relationships between his characters。 There is a ton of travel here, a ton of time to develop these relationships as meaningful relationships。 But 。。。 it just doesn't happen。 By the time Gandalf is lost, it doesn't feel like the company should have any emotions about this。 His just a dude who was traveling with them。 I see none of these characters caring about each other or being friends - except the hobbits, maybe。 But it is even difficult to SEE how those relationships were formed, too。 For example, WHY does Sam know Frodo so well at the end? It's not exactly shown。 WHY are these characters grieving over Gandalf? The relationships are not developed well enough to make it appear that they even had a reason。 The worst example of this is when the characters are all leaving Lothlorien。 It is just randomly stated that Legolas and Gimli are friends now。 What? Why? Where did this come from? Why are you telling me this? Why didn't you show me this development? To summarize: Tolkien has done a wonderful job of creating a world and describing the details of the world。 He does a good job of making time feel as though it is passing, making the travel feel long, or making it seem as though time stands still。 He has not done a great job of making these characters distinguishable from one another, or really developing their relationships。 He has also done far too much of an exposition dump or providing unnecessary information that doesn't move the story along。 He seems too often to fall into a trap of telling instead of showing。 I hate to provide a less than positive review of this book - but, as I said at the start, no earthly author is above criticism。 I will, however, take any education on these matters to help improve my understanding。 It is possible that there were things that I missed in my reading - I did have to split my reading up a great deal, because I was attempting to read this to my very young child, so in the gaps, I may have forgotten things。 I am willing to be wrong here。 。。。more

I have tried to read this book once before and ended up DNF-ing it as I struggled to get into it。 On my second attempt I have managed to complete it but sadly I was left disappointed with this much loved classic。 I found that there was too much waffle and it was unnecessarily descriptive to the point where it left me feeling bored and wanting to put it down。 The storyline itself was ok but it held very little substance outside of the descriptions of the setting。 The chapters felt way too long fo I have tried to read this book once before and ended up DNF-ing it as I struggled to get into it。 On my second attempt I have managed to complete it but sadly I was left disappointed with this much loved classic。 I found that there was too much waffle and it was unnecessarily descriptive to the point where it left me feeling bored and wanting to put it down。 The storyline itself was ok but it held very little substance outside of the descriptions of the setting。 The chapters felt way too long for how little took place in them and the whole book just had a very dense feel to it。 It was interesting to see how this book has inspired many others as there were parts that seemed similar to other more modern fantasy books that I have read。 But honestly I feel that the book has inspired better works than what is found in this original piece。 Honestly it just felt like too much effort for very little reward and I will not be continuing with this series。 。。。more

I started this book so many different times throughout the years but couldn’t ever dedicate the time to finish it。 Finally, I was able to and I couldn’t be happier about it。 I call myself a HUGE Tolkien fan but have never gotten around to reading all of the books。 That’s starting to turn around now, and I’m excited to finish The Lord of The Rings trilogy and move on to the Silmarillion and all of the stories mentioned therein。
